Discover Mid-America — September 2005

Summer doldrums

I have been down this road before. The month of July in Denver recorded a record of 7 or more days of 100+ degrees of record heat and about 20 days of 90 degrees and above. It has indeed been a long hot summer.

I have already exhausted all of my past examples of what to do when nobody shows up, could I possibly come up with at least 10 more things to do? Here it goes…

1. Get on your cell phone and use up all of your free minutes.

2. Take a daily nap after lunch.

3. Reread Gone With the Wind.

4. Bone up on your areas of expertise by rereading books in your antique library.

5. Hogtie anyone who dares to darken your door by showing them the pictures of your son/daughter’s recent wedding.

6. Install a DVD and play movies from the ‘50s and ‘60s.

7. Close for the month of August

8. Call the mayor’s office and tell them Denver is not “small business” friendly.

9. Call your Visa/Master Card provider and ask them to lower your percentage rate.

10. Get out of “Dodge.”

Whew! That was too easy! The antique business is probably one of the most self-fulfilling endeavors anyone can do. It is a labor of love and it certainly is not going to make you an independently wealthy individual. It is a life-long learning process. Remember Christmas is only five months away.
