Discover Mid-America April 2007
It’s spring, so head to those ‘Destinations’ Results of our annual Destinations survey (for 2007) begin on page 16. We thank those readers that took the time to complete the survey and those owners and mall managers that helped distribute the survey. I have to make note of our staff and the effort they put in. Counting the survey, compiling the results, contacting the top vote-getters, interviewing them, getting and taking photos, laying out, and writing and editing the feature makes this annual issue more than the usual task we face each month. From my standpoint and after we pulled this all together, I feel like my first destination is the nearest bar stool for beer. (Miller time, as they say because, yes, I write and edit, too.) You’ll notice some repeat winners, namely Paramount Antique Mall in Wichita, KS and Mission Road Antique Mall in Prairie Village, KS. Congratulations are in order to the management of both those malls. Leading up to this issue, I did receive a little griping from a couple of readers about the recognition these malls received in the past, and, in anticipation, they would receive again this year. Such comments are understandable. But I believe Paramount and Mission Road are deserving. — both are high quality antique malls. Of course, there are other, many other quality malls advertising within the pages of Discover Mid-America. Unfortunately, many do not take part in the Destinations survey. Their customers do return surveys but Destinations — as an informational and marketing tool — doesn’t receive that much priority. Paramount, Mission Road and others promote the concept strongly — and we thank them, again. We want Destination to be just that — informative and helpful to our readers, the dealers, and shops and malls that receive recognition. This publication is in the business of marketing itself and those who deal and sell antiques, collectibles, crafts and the history of their town, museum or historic site. Destinations and its implementation isn’t perfect. And, again, for next year, we’re thinking of what we can do to make it better. Of course, your suggestions — and complaints — are welcomed. * * * That said, let me recognize three of our readers who won in a random drawing for either a Kovel’s 2007 Price List, Fuller’s Best Antiquing or 2007 Craft Register: Jeff Schnabel, Prairie Village, KS, Kerry Hillard, Overland Park, KS and Cathy Veidik, Raytown, MO. Thanks for participating to all. Bruce Rodgers can be contacted at publisher@discoverypub.com. > Editors Notebook Archive past columns |
