Discover Mid-America February 2008
Destinations, Vera and other things Okay, it’s February and the economic news is like an engine with 200,000 miles on it trying to crank through 40W oil when its 10 below. But let’s think spring! When you’re in the antique business, you got to. Good weather, feelings of a new beginning (No, I’m not alluding to the presidential race.) get people energized…and when energized, business can get better. Each year we try and add a little something to doing our part. The Destinations 2008 ballot is out, but it’s online only. Go to www.discoverypub.com and click on the scrolling message. No printed ballot, unless you want to print it out yourself. We simplified it some this year, combining a few categories. We wanted to save you postage, or fax machine time, and also space in Discover Mid-America — not that Destinations doesn’t deserve it. But antiquers need to continue to move online beyond just eBay. Call the online ballot our outwardly manipulative way of pushing that along. From the “electronic” ballots we receive, a winner will be randomly chosen to receive a certificate for two for a one-day stay at Serendipity Bed & Breakfast in the historic Mercer Mansion in Independence, MO. It’s a good way to welcome spring. Ballot deadline is March 1. Like last year, we will have our “editor’s choices,” too, which means that our staff also will help decide what should be recognized as someplace worth visiting. Speaking of value and worth…long-time advertising representative Vera McGehee has left Discovery Publications, I’m sorry to announce. Vera represented Oklahoma, and parts of Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas for our company. I inherited Vera when my brother and I bought the company in 2001. I quickly found out Vera had all the feistiness and independent viewpoints one could expect and attribute to an Oklahoman. I liked her immediately and wish her the very best for the future. Filling her big shoes is Matt Terry, a young man from Mounds, OK. I believe Matt will represent our company — and advertisers — well. Also new to Discover Mid-America is Ginny Anderson from Collins, MO. She and her husband Brad own Wings Antiques & Collectibles in Collins. Like Vera, Ginny brings her antiquing experience to sales for Discover. A final note on this month’s cover feature by yours truly. One the best things about this job is the learning that goes with it. Seems like when I talk with antique and collectibles people, pretty much all I do is learn. Of course, I have to if I’m going to translate what I’m being told into some meaningful type of story so that others can learn a little, too. Maurice Powell, owner of mod50s Modern in Tulsa, OK and the focus of this month’s cover feature, is one of those people who inspires learning because of his enthusiasm for it, too And in learning about what he loves — Mid-Century Modern and regional art — I found myself proud to be living in this great swath of middle America Bruce Rodgers can be contacted at publisher@discoverypub.com. > Refurnished Thoughts Archive past columns |
