Gone but not forgotten (Sept. 2007) Robert E. Curttright Jr., founder of Whiskey Run Creek Vineyard & Winery in Brownville, passed away on June 22. He was 69. For more information, call 402-825-4601 or visit www.whiskeyruncreek.com. ‘Bargains’ for 40 years Back in 1968, John Ostrom was looking for a way to supplement his income as a sheriff’s deputy. So with wife Annette, the couple began buying and selling antiques from their home and wherever they could rent garage space. A year or so later, they built a 5,000-square-foot building in their hometown of Lexington. Those early years had John and Annette operating under the motto “We buy, sell and trade for anything that does not eat.” The business grew because of the emphasis on customer service, John’s eye for quality and good prices. One of the top priorities at Bargain John’s Antiques is to compile correctly all the history and information available on the item and its maker. Also, the business motto has changed a little: “Buy the best that you can afford because in the end this will be the better investment.” Today, John continues to be the main buyer for the business, which he operates with his son Lars. Three signature bright blue buildings identify the business in Lexington even as Bargain John’s is well known across the country. Bargain John’s carries a complete line of general antiques, specializing in the 1840 to 1920s time period. John or Lars can be reached at 308-324-4576 or go online to www.bargainjohn.com.
